Gee Whiz!
In this house about 5:00 am most every morning, my husband grinds coffee beans to make a pot of coffee. It is the most annoying, loud noise. If you are a guest, or one of my sons who occasionally crash at our house, you cringe as you wake up to this terrible sound. I have come to like it only as it indicates that soon my husband will be pouring me a mug full. My husband didn't drink coffee until about 6 years ago. He fell in love with French coffee while working in France on temporary assignment. He became quite the coffee snob and would only prepare in our home a certain brand and only from whole beans. Sadly, he recently succumbed to pre-grounded coffee in the same brand due to the size of bag and availability at our local store. However, as of yesterday, our home now hears the equally annoying and loud sound of my Ninja blender/food processor whizzing my protein shakes, and processing my soups to make them a fine liquid blend. It seems our home is destined to have morning wake up calls of the most uncomfortable listening pleasure.
Yesterday morning, prior to starting day 1 of my liquid diet, I weighed in at 259.2 lbs. I discovered that having my protein shake in the morning kept my from being hungry until a reasonable lunch time. At the end of the day, I had a total intake of 939.75 calories. Granted I was supposed to have 3-4 of these shakes to keep my total calories at 1200 plus a few low calorie, sugar free, low-fat options. I had just 1 shake plus liquid food choices that shared the required amounts of carbs and protein per meal. Adjustments will still have to be made. I found it strange that just the day before I didn't pay attention to calories, protein, or carbs, and yet it took me much more food to satisfy my hunger. Truth is I wasn't paying attention to my hunger scale. The liquids kept me fuller due to volume and high protein but more so because I practiced drinking slowly, and spreading out my intake to eat only when I felt MORE than a little bit hungry.
I learned this when I was in counseling with the therapist that my weight loss program required. Seeing a therapist is provided to access readiness for surgery, and for dealing with emotional hunger, and how to manage after surgery. I had opted for 4 additional sessions to help with emotional and stress eating. For one week, I had to log not my food and calories but rate how hungry I was before I put a morsel in my mouth, and rate what I felt like after I ate in terms of hunger. After practicing this mindful eating with no change to my diet, I lost 2 lbs just by slowing down and figuring out if I was eating for hunger and stopping when satisfied. I had no idea how easy this was. It is essential to practice mindful eating as part of this journey.
Today's intake is sitting just under 1200 calories right now. I am over the amount of carbs but just about right with the protein intake. I still have enough nutrition space for a snack cup of sugar free Jello or a few ounces of low sugar high protein yogurt. I ate a very well blended bean soup but unfortunately I should of poured through a small mesh strainer. Plus I ate too much of it. I got caught up in the taste. Hardest part of this liquid diet phase is making sure you have a variety of flavors and a balance of savory and sweet. I like the taste and coldness of my protein shakes but the fact that it reminds me of a smoothie or milkshake doesn't appeal to me. I am not a big "sweets" person, and less of an ice cream, or milkshake person. I like them but on occasion. Having them throughout the day isn't going to go well. I am going to aim for 2 a day plus a high protein soup -no meat, well blended, strained, and served hot.
I am going to close but first my big complaint so far is DISHES! My husband is good to help but still! The Ninja has 3 separate shake attachments that get used daily to process soups as well plus I used the processor for the bean soup. I have mugs for hot tea, coffee, and soups. Plus spoons, pots n pans. I have to confess prior to this surgery, my husband and I ate at restaurants or bought take out frequently. We are empty-nesters and fixing food and cleaning up was not our favorite. We actually like to cook but we need a maid for clean up! My husband is thin, and not in the least overweight. I don't like him very much...well, maybe just jealous. I love him to pieces actually.
Okay for the closing and positive. This morning I weighed and I am down 3 lbs. I guess the shrinking liver is lighter already! I also can report sleeping was great, I didn't have that heavy full feeling or heartburn I would feel on occasion.
Day 2 is going down as a training day. Successful but too many carbs and too large of servings at one time.
